So yesterday I was particularly bored, having no work left to do, and my boss using the camera, so I decided to browse online. First I went to get Kevin a singing telegram (a banana no less) and decided that since we were trying to save, that that would be an irresponsible use of money, but then I went on ebay, and ended up following one of the links to this scientology information site. It was more something to laugh at, because of it's ignorance, and how sad it is that people are so willing to believe anything that relinquishes control and makes their lives easier, but then I started reading and the whole thing falls into the technical description of a cult. For example, they have some pretty disurbing beliefs like human bodies are actually inhabited by alien spirits, and the techniques of training are hypnotic techniques. Also (and I found this particularly sad) they try to force young pregnant women to abort and if the child is kept alive, it is sent to a militant-type camp that starts the brainwashing early. The threats that are made by this organization are along the lines of "I hope that you die a painful death and scream all your years" which is really creepy. Hubbard, this guy who founded it (who was a mentally-ill sci-fi writer, by the way) set up this plan to take over economics, government, and culture, and they go as far as to ask you questions like "have you ever killed someone?" or "have you ever enslaved a race of people?"(yeah, that really is a question), while hooked up to a primitive lie detector. The reason why I am posting this, is that in the news there has been a rash of scientology interviews and questions and crap, and after reading more about it, it seems to me that having a CULT with some really high profile people in it could easily turn into terrorism. The scary part is that this international cult is masquerading as a religion, and has some aspects of the mob to it, as well as believing that the ends justify the means. In this way, could it be that we are totally ignoring a group of people who could easily stretch their freedom of speech and religion into terrorism? Consider the threats...those are pretty creepy, and many scientologists have threatened to "ruin" people etc, similar to Bin Laden in western society. Just something to think about.
Here is a good link if you want to read more/specifics/court documents (the FBI, france, germany and australia have conflicted and investigated and brought to trial members):
